If you haven’t been to the dentist for many years you will no doubt be very worried about what they may say to you.
The commonest comments I hear are :
I was worried about being told off
I was ashamed about the state of my teeth
What if they all need to come out?
I can’t let someone look at them they are too bad
Here’s the good news. Find a dentist who understands how it feels and They will WANT to help you to get over your fear. A No Fear Dentists favourite thing is helping someone improve their mouth health and be proud of their smile.
So how do you find that dentist?
Finding your dentist
1.
Ask around. You would probably be suprised how many people are scared of the dentist. Ask who is the best with nervous patients. And possibly be prepared to travel a little way to find the right one. Think how far you could travel to see them. Some people come and see me after travelling several hours, and make a day of their visit while they are here.
2.
Do your research. There is a lot of information out there now that makes finding a dentist to help you so much easier. Facebook, Google, Local adverts all provide you information. Learn about the practices people have suggested. Remember not all dentists in the building may be a good fit for you.
Clues to look for while researching:
Sedation (can be a clue that someone is good with nervous people but not always, you need MORE than just this)
The Wand (a way of giving local anaesthetic that’s super comfy for nervous patients and people with needle phobia)
Good with children (if they are good with kids they will be good with you too)
Evidence from other nervous patients. Are there testimonials on the website?
3.
Get in touch!
This is a tough one, I know.
Lots of people think about this for a long time before deciding to go ahead and make contact. Eventually the time will be right and you can get in touch.
Look for email addresses or Facebook messenger if you are worried about picking up the phone.
Ask if you can go and have a look round before taking the plunge. Can you chat to a team member who is not the dentist? A receptionist or dental nurse may be able to put you at ease and give you valuable info about which dentist will be the best one to help you.
You will get good vibes from the right place. It might not feel very ‘clinical’ there may be comfy sofas, coffee machines or TV to watch in a lounge area.
When you are ready you can BOOK YOUR FIRST VISIT.
